hand in hand soaps + a life saving giveaway

philanthropy is a beautiful thing. i discovered hand in hand soaps today via oh joy! (seriously, is she just not the cutest?!) and it just made me so happy.

these soaps – beautifully packaged – not only save rain forest acreage (50 square feet for each bar purchased), they also put a bar of soap in the hand of a child in need. this simple act of washing our hands, clearly something we all take so foregranted, is essential in preventing illness in children. purchasing one bar – one bar – can save a child’s life.

check out hand in hands beautiful website to purchase or visit anthropologie and get involved in this beautiful philanthropic act.

BONUS: or you can leave a comment below and be one of 4 readers to win a bar. i’ll be purchasing a bundle of five and drawing 4 beautiful winners on monday, march 12th. together, we can save 5 children’s lives.

street style inspiration and girl crush – my style pill

fear not color, dolls. a little pop can go a long way. case in point, christine from my style pill, who so frequently fearlessly rocks color. i stumbled on this image on pinterest, scooted over to jcrew and found the blythe blouse. once i clicked through to the canary post on my style pill i realized it was the exact blouse christine is rocking in this set of photos. 1 for me!

so here is your homework for the weekend – throw on a little color and spice it up!

when fairy tales come true

some times when you stop to catch your breath you realize how much your life is changed but you can’t pinpoint the moment you took a different direction. other times, you reflect and realize how much has changed but can pinpoint the exact moment that would define the rest of your life.

today i’m going to be a little cheesy, but hey, it’s what love will do to a girl. a year ago one kiss – ugh get ready for every cliche in the book – changed my entire life.

my boyfriend and i have had the most incredible year, and i have been the happiest i can ever remember being. i could sit here and tell you it’s been a fairy tale (it has), that he gives me butterflies (he does), that he is my soul mate (he is) and that even when we argue i am still madly in love with him (i am)

i won’t go there.

where i will go is telling you these few things – yes it is true that when you fall in love you will know it (but you could go walking through life thinking you are until you actually are). yes when you talk about your relationship you should feel like it has been a fairy tale perfect one. yes you should want to spend every minute with that person (and not because you’re not independent people but because you love each other and enjoy each other’s company). yes tell them you love them every single chance you get (life is far too short not to). always pick and choose your battles.

in the past year, not a day has gone by where i have not been 100% happy. not a single argument has clouded how much i love this man. and every day has made us stronger as a couple and is helping me grow into the woman i have always wanted to be.

i am not an overly spiritual individual but there’s something about this that feels touched by a deity, that is fatalistic. that makes me feel blessed and thankful every single day.

everything i’ve heard about johnny cash and june carter cash had me longing for a certain type of relationship. i had never found it before, but now that i have i want to tell you this – watch walk the line and read about what people have said about the man in black and his soul mate. then never ever ever ever settle until you find it. and trust me, you will know it when you do.

i love you sweetie, with all my heart. you are my johnny cash.

living in: groundhog day

happy groundhog day, dolls! unfortunately punxsutawney phil did not emerge with a mai tai and we will be subjected to another 6 weeks of winter.

i definitely recommend popping in groundhog day today (or watching it instant here) and grab a little inspiration this week from the flick. i definitely would like to be curled up with a cozy blanket to watch this – afterall, we’re going to have another 6 weeks of cold!living in: ground hog day

pretty in pink

with just under two weeks to go until v-day, i thought it would be an appropriate time to start getting in the mood for some pink!

despite its correlation to love and hallmark holidays i really do love pink this time of year. it’s gloomy outside, cold, wet. it’s hard to get out of bed. but a pop of color can really brighten up your day and your mood. they say to wear red to improve your mood, but i think pink is great too, especially hot pink.

what will you be wearing this winter to kick the winter blues?

geronimo balloons, confetti system, DIYs and big plans for 2012

the end of 2011 brought a lot of inspiration for me and had me thinking a lot about the future of this blog and what i want to get out of this experience. for me, this has been a place about beautiful things, the things that inspire me. i want this blog to be a place where i build off my theory of decorating – that your life is a collection of layers – the idea that your life is a curation.

you collect things and people and memories and you put them in a place – in your home, in your heart, maybe on facebook, maybe on a blog.

so with this little dose of enlightenment, i bring you my current obsessions, geronimo balloons and confetti system, and let you know that there are changes coming for this blog this year. we’re redesigning your entire experience at her long way home and rethinking the editorial calendar to bring you what you want out of this blog and what i need out of this blog.

you can expect to see a lot of DIY projects, reviews, blogger interviews and guest posts, and of course design and fashion inspiration. you can even expect to see some actual food posts this year. above all you’ll really get to see me, the things that are important to my life and i hope that you’ll join me on this journey and that you’ll enjoy the ride taking the long way with me.

and remember dolls, every day is cause to celebrate!

baby, it’s cold outside

i remember when i was in probably 5th, 6th and 7th grade puffer jackets were in. and then they were so out. and as they say, fashion comes and goes in cycles, and they are most definitely back in – with vengeance and absolute style.

here are my top three picks for puffer jackets – from swiss army and jcrew – should the weather ever get cold enough to warrant one of these perfect coats.

get the look: virginia macdonald

sometimes design can be overwhelming. but if you take an inspirational photo and break it down piece by piece it’s definitely attainable, and often at a much lower cost than the magazines and online rags we all drool over.

i stumbled upon this photo by photographer virginia macdonald featured on desire to inspire yesterday and fell in love immediately. i love the layered look, plus it’s light and airy and a little sassy with that punch of leopard print. at the end of the day though, you can break this overall vibe down into 5 essential pieces and then layer on top of that with light and airy pieces of art (and a good dose of white paint).
