the return of mad men (and 10 modcloth that nail the style)

with the return of mad men i find myself having the warm and fuzzies all over again for that classic mad men look. what it really comes down to, unless you’re a joan, is the fit and flare cut. you can find this cut just about everywhere these days, from big department stores to anthropologie and so on.

i think the best selection is over at modcloth. (no this isn’t a sponsored post, though it’s starting to sound like it…) they truly do have a wide variety of mad men style dresses (fit and flare, remember!) in a great range of price – some for less than $60! (you certainly can’t find that at anthropologie.)

so, ladies, do you mad men?

the perfect little black dress

karen kane is one of those designers i think our generation has in the back of their minds as a designer for their moms. well ladies, i am here to Screen Shot 2013-04-23 at 2.48.09 PMtell you that is not true. i truly love a lot of her pieces so when i was approached by the karen kane team to write about this dress i knew it just wasn’t an opportunity i could possibly pass up.

the scuba dress is the ultimate little black dress and with a unique neckline its certainly not your momma’s LBD. even the fabric ups the ante on a wardrobe staple. it hugs in all the right places and sucks it all in for you. i feel like everything is very smooth in the dress – PLUS, i love this, it doesn’t wrinkle. i can’t stand when i get dressed for a client meeting and then by the afternoon or after a car ride i’m completely wrinkled. this dress seriously does it all. i implore you to purchase it. you can dress it up. you can dress it down. it’s appropriate for anything from the office to a date to a wedding.

the little black dress is like a good pair of jeans, the perfect fitting white blouse and a blazer cut like it was made for your body – they are all staples every girl needs to have in her closet. the beauty of an LBD is that, like i said before, you can throw it on for anything. if you are ever struggling with what to wear, then you should reach for your LBD. shake it up with fun necklaces, bold earrings, flats, heels, boots, scarves – you name it and it’ll make your LBD investment work over and over again for you.

the beautiful part about this karen kane LBD investment? i mean, besides the wrinkle resistance and the awesomely modern neckline and phenomenal material that is just so 2013? it’s only $108. think about it – how many times, if you had that perfect dress hanging in your closet, would you reach for it? well worth the money.

so here are three ways to style your LBD – from the office to a date to the weekend, you need this dress.

how to: wear a midi skirt (or dress)

happy monday, dolls! hope you all had a great weekend. over the past few days i’ve been getting my wardrobe ready for spring, pulling inspiration from various places pinterest and thinking about what trends i am into this year and how i can make what i already own work around those trends.

last year was definitely a maxi dress year, and i’m definitely still all for that silhouette, however, this year is definitely all about midi – midi skirts and midi dresses. prints, solids, chiffon, tulle, jersey – you dream it, it’s out there. here’s the key – if you want to wear flats with your skirt or dress, make sure it’s a tad shorter than the typical midi (mid calf). i love these skirts and dresses with heels.

here are my 2 tips for really making this trend work for you:

1. never wear boots with a midi length anything – it adds a lot of bulk.

2. choose a piece, whether a dress or a skirt, that can be dressed up or dressed down. think about how you would like your skirt with a tank top, chambray, printed blouse, white or gray t, etc. think about a dress with a sweater over it (hello, doubling as a skirt!) or a cardigan. think about it with flip flops, wedges, espadrilles and dressier pumps.

i love asos for midi skirts and dresses – definitely hit them up if you are looking for something at a little lower price point.

so i want to know – will YOU rock this trend?

glamming up the graphic t

graphic t’s and blazers are a staple in my wardrobe. they can always be glammed up with a little bling and a tailored blazer, and then totally dressed down with ripped jeans and flip flops. i never shy away from rocking a graphic t at work, since my office is casual, but don’t do it if you can’t. especially when there’s a curseword involved in your t. but in general, i say go for it, dolls!

pair black peg pants or even trousers with a great blazer (experiment with color and cut!!!) and a great necklace and you’re good to go. i would recommend curling your hair or pony tail to make it look a little more thought out.

do you rock the graphic t? how do you wear it?

weekend trip essentials

it’s that time of year when planning weekend trips are just as essential as what you pack in your luggage for them. weekends with your significant other, weekends with your family, weekends with the girls – i say let’s plan a weekend trip every weekend! who’s with me?

any takers? no?

so this is the thing about weekends away – go to the beach and keep it casual. it makes packing that much easier. pack your underpinnings, a pair of sandals, a dress and scarf that can double as a shawl, a pair of lightweight jeans and a long sleeve shirt for walking around at night (especially if you are near the water), and 2 bathing suits. oh and a hat and a bag – lipstick and perfume. it sounds like a lot but it would fit in a small bag and you don’t even need a suitcase!

here is what i plan on packing for my girls trip to cape may at the end of – get this – may!

easter, all grown up

in thinking about all the preparations for easter, i was thinking about the ridiculous outfits i wore as a kid. it seems, when you’re that young and your parents have total control over everything you put onto your body, that it always includes white shoes with lacy white socks and a bonnet and some relatively cute dress. but as you grow older, gone are the days of traditional easter garb.

you can wear pants, dresses, skirts…mix and match patterns and colors. but overall here are some tips for dressing for easter:

1. don’t pick any hemlines that are too short or too low – it’s a holy day, don’t be silly!

2. wear spring friendly colors

3. embrace light nail polish (totally digging essie’s who’s the boss)

4. stay away from black – it’s a mournful color, don’t do it – it’s a celebration!

and now for what you probably came for – a little dose of easter outfit inspiration:

(ps – melissa handmade her skirt!)

the first lady is always a great source of fashion inspiration, for any occasion.

a jean jacket can dress down a fancier dress, or keep the whole affair totally casual, youthful and springy!

on wednesdays, we wear pink

i never really liked pink much until recently. i’m not sure what happened pinterest happened and i’m thoroughly obsessed.

i’m starting to see it’s a great color on any skin tone, from light pinks to dark pinks and neon pinks (clothes, not skin tone. if you are neon pink i would love to meet you, though.) it’s fun, it’s youthful. dress it up, dress it down – end of the day, it’s just fun.

here’s a little pink inspiration for you, just in time for wednesday and everything you need to get 3 looks out of one blazer.
